What is conference interpreting?
A linguistic service that enables communication between participants of different languages in different on-site, virtual or hybrid meetings of all types. There are four main modalities in interpreting: simultaneous, consecutive, whispering, and sight translation. Each one of them can be carried out with in-situ interpreters (i.e. at a conference room or as an escort interpreter) or, in the latest years, remotely.
What do the different interpreting modalities consist of?
- Simultaneous Interpreting: Work is performed in isolated booths which can be placed at the event’s venues or at a remote interpretation studio. Interpreters speak at the same time as the speakers, and the participants can choose the language channel they want to listen to.
- Consecutive interpreting: Notes are taken, and the speech is rendered orally into the target language as soon as the speaker has finished.
- Whispering: The speech is translated simultaneously to one or two participants.
- Sight translation: A text is read and translated orally and simultaneously into the target language.
What is the difference between a professional interpreter and a bilingual person?
In addition to having an in-depth knowledge of the languages of their linguistic combinations, interpreters should have extensive culture and the ability to research different topics, quickly overcome any learning curve, and keep abreast of the evolution of their languages and the topics they specialize in. Interpreters need to develop their analysis and synthesis skills and memorize its terminology in order to be prepared for each assignment.
Also, a high level of concentration is required to adapt to each speaker, fully understand the message and immediately convey it into another language by using the appropriate terms and the correct syntax. During their education interpreters learn techniques so they can perform their work, remember words, control their nervousness and exhaustion caused by the level of demanded attention, work under pressure with a high sense of responsibility and provide a fluent rendition that gives the impression their work is easy.
